Orchestrating Growth:
Executive Summary
Cleo, the global leader in AI-driven supply chain orchestration solutions through its Cleo Integration Cloud (CIC) platform, has relied on Mission Cloud to help manage and optimize its AWS environment through years of rapid growth. Mission Cloud has delivered the cost visibility, technical guidance, and hands-on support Cleo needed while scaling to hundreds of cloud customers and a growing volume of annual transactions from thousands to millions to billions. Together, the partnership has combined managed services with Cross-service Private Pricing Agreement (CS PPA) support, controlling cloud costs, avoiding missteps during a critical ramp-up period, and freeing capital for Cleo to reinvest in its platform.
About Cleo
Cleo is a supply chain orchestration platform that delivers contextual intelligence created through CIC’s native AI capabilities to help customers in manufacturing, logistics, distribution, retail and other industries manage, operate, and orchestrate their supply chains by sharing document and data flows across every party involved. Layering additional insight on top of that data lets Cleo’s customers drive revenue growth, sharpen customer service, and capture real cost savings through a growing set of roles-based agents.
Scale faster without breaking your cloud
Background
When Cleo moved its platform to AWS, the company engaged Mission Cloud as its cloud partner from the outset to ensure it had an expert guide for onboarding and then ramping up its new cloud platform. Since then, Cleo has grown about 20% annually, doubling in size and launching a cloud product now used by hundreds of customers.
Challenge
Like any company transforming and expanding its portfolio to cloud native SaaS, Cleo faced a journey defined by two phases: onboarding and ramp-up. Onboarding demanded the most care, since Cleo needed its platform to perform exactly as planned while keeping costs aligned with projections. As usage scaled during ramp-up, new challenges surfaced. Amazon EC2 costs climbed quickly as the platform matured. Cleo's internal team, some members experienced with AWS and others new to it, had not yet built the muscle to manage Reserved Instances and Savings Plans independently. Cleo needed a partner who understood that growth trajectory, to maintain the customer experience its supply chain clients depend on.
Why Mission
Cleo selected Mission Cloud through a competitive RFP process. What has kept the partnership intact for years is customer focus. Mission treats Cleo's success, technical and commercial alike, as a shared objective, walking through AWS pricing structures and identifying services suited to Cleo's use case. Sameer Katiyar, CFO of Cleo, cites a “phenomenal” partnership that consistently focuses on addressing issues and opportunities from the client’s perspective. Why AWS
Cleo adopted AWS years ago as an early mover into cloud technology, ahead of much of its industry. Leadership wanted a platform that was stable and secure, but still evolving to keep pace with customer expectations and shifting industry demands. That combination of proven reliability and constant improvement became the foundation Cleo built its supply chain orchestration business on.
Solution
Cleo engaged Mission Cloud to guide the onboarding and ramp-up phases as it matured its SaaS platform on AWS. Once Cleo had started its portfolio expansion by hosting its SaaS platform on AWS, Mission stepped in immediately afterward with cost visibility, monitoring, and best-practices guidance the team needed as usage scaled. Weekly calls became a fixture of the relationship, with Mission surfacing concrete, actionable findings rather than generic advice, flagging patterns such as unusually high data usage in a specific area, or recommending a more efficient service for a given workload.
Cost management focused on Amazon EC2, which accounted for about 99% of Cleo's Reserved Instance spend. Mission managed Cleo's Savings Plan and Reserved Instances for about five years until Cleo's internal team built enough expertise to bring that work in-house. With Mission’s help, Cleo later transitioned to a CS PPA, layering even more savings and efficiencies on top of the optimization already underway.
Security remained a shared priority throughout the partnership as well. Mission has provided impactful recommendations to Cleo's cloud operations team for implementing guardrails, identity management, and compliance controls. Mission's consultative role gave Cleo's growing internal team a sounding board it could rely on at every stage of the platform's evolution.
Results
The partnership has helped Cleo avoid the costly missteps common among companies managing rapid cloud growth without expert guidance. Sameer Katiyar noted that going it alone was possible in theory, having seen other companies attempt it, but the risk to platform stability, and by extension customer experience, is not one Cleo was willing to take.
Under Mission’s guidance, Cleo has accumulated significant cost savings achieved through Reserved Instances management, Savings Plan optimization, and CS PPA execution. Every dollar saved has gone back into the platform, with reinvestment now focused primarily on AI as Cleo looks toward its next phase of growth.
On the customer side, Cleo's supply chain orchestration platform depends on three qualities: stability, visibility, and the ability to act on real-time, context-intelligent insights. AWS provided Cleo with a cloud native foundation for all three, and Mission's guidance has turned that foundation into results. Stability held steady even as transaction volume climbed, a byproduct of the platform tuning and best practice work Mission provided along the way. Visibility sharpened because the architecture itself is built for the cloud, with Mission's monitoring and benchmarking surfacing issues before they become problems. And centralizing analytics in a single cloud environment gave Cleo the ability to respond to supply chain challenges as they emerge, or get ahead of them proactively, informed by actionable recommendations Mission delivers on weekly calls.
Cleo has nearly doubled in size as a business since the partnership began, growing about 20% annually, and has expanded from zero cloud customers to several hundreds. Its cloud product, launched during this period, continues to help Cleo customers manage their supply chains with greater visibility and control. Cleo’s AI-native [supply chain orchestration] platform now processes increasing billions of transactions annually, up from a fraction of that before moving to AWS.
