Disaster Recovery on AWS Frequently Asked Questions

What is RTO and RPO, and how do I measure them?

RTO (Recovery Time Objective) is the target time you set for the recovery of your IT and business activities after a disaster strikes. RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is the maximum allowable period in which data might be lost from an IT service due to a major incident. Taken together, these are a strong measurement for determining how your environment will recover in the event of an incident.

Isn’t disaster recovery just about how I backup my data?

While backing up data is crucial, this is not the only element of disaster recovery. Business continuity can be just as much about the loss of critical systems for operating as it is about data. You have to weigh the cost of any strategy you consider, and the compliance standards to which you’re being held, which can go beyond the integrity of data. If you’re running any kind of distributed architecture, using the microservices pattern for instance, the steps to restore may be much more involved. Consider that DR is also about how you coordinate teams during these events, along with testing, and drilling to ensure preparedness.

I want to ensure perfect integrity of my data and environment. Is this achievable?

In theory yes, but this ideal often forgets that there are certain elements that are out of our control—for example, external dependencies and how they will respond to an application that needs to recover, or the human teams executing the steps of your plan during a disaster. But the most glaring issue with this ideal is that it ignores cost. Redundancy begets cost, so while it may in theory be possible to prepare your environment for any scope of event, it may not be financially feasible. Disaster recovery planning is about understanding that these factors need to be weighed and designing a plan that accommodates them.

Once I’ve come up with a disaster recovery plan, I’m good to go, right?

Yes and no. Yes, because you’ve taken the first step for preparedness. But no, because you will need to drill and train on it. And because as your business grows and applications evolve, you will need to revisit and revise your plan to account for these changes. In this sense, much like security, disaster recovery is not one-and-done work which is ever truly finished. But a proactive investment in DR can pay dividends over a long period of time, especially if effort is made to maintain the plan.

How do I test my DR plan without affecting my production environment?

You can’t completely test a DR plan without actually running a game day on your environment as it is. You’ll want to test your failover procedures and in a real DR scenario you’ll be running on your alternate infrastructure, possibly for a significant amount of time—this means you’ll want to keep the alternate environment running for long enough to identify issues. And you’ll need to test your fail back procedures, getting your original environment online and in sync with the failover environment.
