Reserved Instance Operations Program Frequently Asked Questions
How does RIO differ from other similar programs?
Mission Cloud’s RIO program provides more transparency, more savings, and greater flexibility. Some programs will take a predatory cut of all savings they generate. Others will only purchase No-Upfront reservations to avoid capital commitment. Others will only purchase convertible RIs, to avoid AWS penalties. With our strategy, Mission incurs more risk by offering All-Upfront and Partial-Upfront reservations, but you get more savings. Because of the size of our program and the depth of our analysis, we are able to do this while many other programs cannot.
What will be my RI and SP coverage after joining RIO?
The average customer sees 70% coverage of their overall environment—but keep in mind yours could be higher or lower, depending on your infrastructure. And if this level of coverage sounds similar to your current level, you may still have significant savings opportunities. We commonly see customers leverage SPs for savings because they are less risky, but after joining RIO, RIs will come to make up the majority of that coverage, creating a greater net savings.
How much savings does a customer typically see under RIO?
On average, customers realize a 7% to 24% reduction in their total AWS bill with RIO, depending on their level of reservation purchasing and optimization prior to joining.
How much does RIO cost?
Zero—this is a free program for all customers of Mission Cloud’s managed services. We cover all expenses related to the service through our percentage share of the realized savings.
What are the minimum requirements for RIO?
You must have an AWS monthly spend of at least $10,000 and CUR data we can analyze to qualify your spending for the program. We typically recommend at least 3 months of CUR data to begin saving. As part of joining RIO, you must be signed up for Mission Cloud’s reseller program and commit to a one-year term.
