Coding for Success: How Mission Secured White Plume's Healthcare Revenue Cycle Platform

Executive Summary

White Plume, a leading provider of AI-powered healthcare revenue cycle automation, partnered with Mission to modernize its AWS infrastructure, achieve HITRUST security certification objectives, and optimize cloud operations. Through Mission's comprehensive managed and professional services, White Plume achieved significant cost savings of 30-40%, enhanced security posture, and streamlined development processes while eliminating the need to hire new full-time employees (FTEs).

About White Plume

White Plume provides AI solutions that optimize and automate healthcare revenue cycles for large physician practices and private equity-backed position practices. Their technology optimizes medical coding processes, enabling healthcare organizations to repurpose up to 60-70% of their coding resources to focus on other business functions through advanced rules and AI automation.

"Mission has allowed us to prioritize resources. I've been able to delay or skip hiring altogether when it comes to AWS expertise. I don’t need extra people to monitor and do behind-the-scenes DevOps configurations on my environment. Mission handles that for us."

CTO

Background

White Plume had been using AWS since the early days of cloud computing but faced growing technical debt as its infrastructure evolved. When its primary AWS specialist departed, the company needed expert cloud guidance to modernize its platform and complete key activities in pursuit of HITRUST security certification for a major customer opportunity.

Challenge

White Plume faced several critical challenges that threatened their growth trajectory. The departure of their in-house AWS specialist created a significant expertise gap at a crucial time. Their aging infrastructure contained substantial technical debt accumulated over years of organic growth. The company needed to achieve HITRUST certification to secure a major customer opportunity, requiring extensive security hardening and best practices implementation. Additionally, they needed hybrid cloud integration to connect their Azure-based identity management with AWS production environments, and their legacy VPN and access management systems posed security risks that would prevent compliance certification.

Why Mission

White Plume chose Mission after evaluating several AWS partners, specifically seeking a provider with deep experience working with small to mid-size AWS footprints. Mission's comprehensive cost optimization service served as the initial low-hanging fruit, offering AWS support at competitive rates while providing additional value through spend analysis. White Plume benefited from Mission's flexible engagement models and expertise in both managed cloud services and professional services, enabling them to scale resources as needed without hiring expensive dedicated full-time employees (FTEs).

Why AWS

White Plume continued leveraging AWS as its primary cloud platform due to its comprehensive suite of services, which supported its growing SaaS business. AWS' advanced security features were particularly important for handling sensitive healthcare data, while the platform's scalability enabled White Plume to migrate its entire customer base from on-premises solutions to its cloud-based SaaS platform.

"It’s a true partnership. Mission is always there to help me out. Whether it’s the call center, the team monitoring my systems, or my lead architect, it’s always a very personalized touch."

David Morris,
CTO

Solution

White Plume and Mission began their partnership by focusing on cost optimization, establishing 24/7 monitoring with New Relic, and integrating with CrowdStrike’s security platform. Mission's team provided immediate value by identifying significant spending inefficiencies and implementing proper resource management. The relationship then expanded to include Mission's professional services for infrastructure modernization. The team tackled three major areas of focus: 1) security hardening to meet HITRUST requirements, 2) hybrid cloud integration between Azure and AWS, and 3) network infrastructure re-platforming to improve scalability. A particularly complex and innovative solution involved integrating Azure's Microsoft Entra ID (fka Azure Active Directory) with AWS through Identity Center, enabling single sign-on capabilities and role-based access controls. The team established AWS Control Tower for organizational security, implemented site-to-site VPNs, and configured domain services to allow EC2 instances to communicate with Microsoft Entra ID. This eliminated the legacy practice of sharing administrative keys and created a secure, scalable access management system where users could assume specific permission sets based on their roles.

Results

The partnership with Mission delivered transformative results across multiple dimensions of White Plume's operations. Cost optimization efforts achieved remarkable 30-40% savings in AWS spend. On this, David Morris, CTO of White Plume added "If I'm able to free up budget money, I can use that for other projects or to hire more people. That grows the business and ultimately increases our AWS usage.”

The security improvements were equally impressive, with the Azure-AWS integration creating a unified identity management system that eliminated shared administrative credentials and established proper role-based access controls. This work directly supported White Plume’s ongoing journey to achieving HITRUST certification.

The collaboration between White Plume and Mission has freed internal resources to focus on core business development, provided enterprise-level cloud expertise, and established 24/7 monitoring that gives perpetual peace of mind. By eliminating the need to hire dedicated AWS resources, Mission has enabled White Plume to put ample investment toward business growth and other strategic objectives.
